National Ag Day Essay Contest

The Agriculture Council of America (ACA) is calling on seventh- to 12th-grade students to submit an original essay of 450 words about the importance of agriculture. This year's theme is "Agriculture - Bigger Than You Think," and the deadline is Feb. 15. Teachers are asked to encourage their students to participate.

This year's topic highlights a broader focus of agriculture, showcasing the diversity of today's American farms. Though row crops and livestock are still very much a part of the foundation of the industry, agriculture today has multiple touch points in our daily lives and many career opportunities.

"This year's essay contest provides a great opportunity for all of us to learn more about the vision our young people have for the role of agriculture in their lives and in our country's future," says Linda Tank, Vice President of Communications for CHS Inc. "Their understanding of the tremendous impact agriculture has on our daily lives is key to the future of this vital industry."

This year's national winner will receive a $1,000 prize and round-trip ticket to Washington, D.C., to be recognized during the March 11 Celebration of Ag Dinner held at the Whitten Patio. At the dinner, the winner will have the opportunity to join with industry representatives, members of Congress, federal agency representatives, media and other friends in a celebration of agriculture. Statewide winners of the contest also will be selected. Each will receive a $100 prize.

This is the 35th anniversary of National Ag Day. The goal of the ACA is to provide a spotlight on agriculture and the food and fiber industry the first of each spring (National Ag Day), to help consumers understand not only how food and fiber products are produced, but to celebrate accomplishments in providing safe, abundant and affordable products.

The Ag Day Essay Contest is sponsored by CHS Inc., The Council for Agricultural Science and Technology, High Plains Journal, National Association of Farm Broadcasting, National Agri-Marketing Association, Country Living Association and McCormick Company.

All entries should be sent to: Ag Day Contest, Agriculture Council of America, 11020 King Street, Suite 205, Overland Park, KS 66210, or submitted by e-mail to essay@agday.org. Entry applications and official rules for the contest can be found at www.hpj.com/agdayessay. — Ellen Butler

Camp Rocky 2008

What: The Colorado Association of Conservation District presents Camp Rocky 2008
Who: Outdoor Environmental Adventures for youth ages 14-19
Where: Divide, Colorado
When: July 6 - 12, 2008
How Much: $250 (scholarships are available)

Camp Rocky is a week-long, residential camp for 14- through 19-year-olds who enjoy the outdoors and are interested in natural resources. Camp Rocky staff, made up of resource professionals from around the state, help participants learn about their environment while working in teams and making new friends. Each year, new and returning teens choose one of the following resource fields for their area of focus.

Forest Management
The forestry team learns about different forest types, how to determine the overall health of the forest, how to find a tree’s age without cutting it down, different insects and diseases that affect trees and how fire can be “good” for forest health and safety.

Rangeland Science
The rangeland science team learns about the “fitness” of rangeland and the forage it provides. They will study how rangelands provide food for animals, habitat for wildlife, and open space with natural beauty for humans to enjoy and clean water for drinking and recreation!

Soil and Water Conservation
This team learns about the primary components of a watershed. They will “create” a river and learn how many different types of soil affect plants, wildlife and humans.

Fish & Wildlife Management
The wildlife biology team will track a radio-collared animal, go electro-fishing, learn how Colorado wildlife adapt to their surroundings and complete a habitat enhancement project.

During the second half of the week, students from these different resource teams will develop and present natural resource management plans. Participants will use their group plan to complete a management project. Additional activities include volleyball games, hiking, a campfire, the Camp Rocky Challenge, and a dance. At the close of camp, students receive a Camp Rocky Certificate of Completion.

Limited scholarship opportunities are also available. To inquire about scholarships, please contact the Colorado Association of Conservation Districts (CACD) at 719.686.0020, email cacd@cacd.us or contact your local conservation district. Attached is information that you will need to get registration materials from the CACD office. A non-refundable $75 deposit is required by June 15, 2008. Attached is an informational brochure and further instructions on receiving application materials. — Ellen Butler
