National 4-H Congress is typically held Thanksgiving weekend in Atlanta, Georgia. More than 1,300 4-H members from all 50 states and Puerto Rico attend Congress. Going to Congress is often the highlight of a 4-H member's career. While at Congress delegates hear inspirational speakers, participate in cultural workshops, take part in a large-scale community service project, visit the historical sites of Atlanta, dance, eat, and meet new friends. The Colorado 4-H program views National 4-H Congress as an important opportunity for 4-H members, and is committed to providing this experience to as many 4-H members who can benefit from the experience as possible. Congratulations to all of our delegates! — Ellen Butler

Break a World Reading Record!
If you saw Charlotte's Web in Milwaukee, you will be very interested in this opportunity. And if you didn't see it, you will still be interested!
Walden Media, Paramount Pictures, HarperCollins, Nickelodeon Movies, Kerner Entertainment and our partners are teaming up to "Break a World Reading Record With Charlotte’s Web." The record attempt is for MOST PEOPLE READING ALOUD SIMULTANEOUSLY IN MULTIPLE LOCATIONS.
On Wednesday, December 13, 2006, at 12 noon (EST), you are invited to join students, educators, librarians and fans of Charlotte’s Web who will gather in schools, hospitals, libraries and community centers to read a passage from E. B. White’s classic tale of friendship, kindness, selfless giving and miracles. It is our hope that “Break a World Reading Record with Charlotte’s Web” will introduce this wonderful story to a new generation and reintroduce the story to fans who haven’t read it since childhood.
If you know of a 4-H group or groups that might want to get involved, the following web page offers instructions on how: http://www.charlotteswebbarr.com/program.php — Jan Carroll
National Arbor Day Foundation Invites Fifth-Grade Classrooms to Showcase Creativity
The National Arbor Day Foundation is inviting fifth-grade students across the country to showcase their artistic talent — while learning about trees — with its annual Arbor Day National Poster Contest.
Themed “Trees are Terrific…and forests are too!” the contest is cosponsored by Toyota and encourages students to learn about the importance of tree diversity in a community and show off their creative flair by designing a poster to reflect this year’s theme. This year marks the 16th anniversary of the contest.
“Trees are as diverse as our children are,” says John Rosenow, president of The National Arbor Day Foundation. “This year’s National Poster Contest celebrates the important role trees and children play in our lives.”
How to sign up
Educators can sign up by visiting www.coloradotrees.org or by writing to: Colorado Tree Coalition c/o Colorado State Forest Service, La Junta District, 208 Santa Fe Avenue, Suite #21, La Junta, CO 81050, or by sending an e-mail to dodavis@lamar.colostate.edu. They will receive a free activity guide on the importance of trees in a community, free ecosystem curriculum materials, including in-depth lesson plans, hands-on activities, and detailed contest information. Last year, more than 75,000 fifth-grade classrooms received the materials. The deadline for Colorado is March 3, 2007.
Winners announced on National Arbor Day
The winner of the 2007 national poster contest will be announced on National Arbor Day, April 27, 2007. This year, students from 46 states will participate in state-level competitions, with each winner advancing to the national finals. The top three finalists will be selected from the state-level winners.
The first place winner, and his or her parents and teacher, will receive an expense-paid trip to Nebraska City, Neb., birthplace of Arbor Day, where they will stay at Lied Lodge and Conference Center and participate in the June 1-3, 2007 National Awards Weekend. The winner will receive a $1,000 savings bond and a lifetime membership in The National Arbor Day Foundation. The winning student’s teacher will receive $200 for classroom materials. The second place winner will receive a $500 savings bond, and third place will win a $250 savings bond. Their teachers also will receive $100 and $50 respectively.
The National Arbor Day Foundation is a nonprofit education organization dedicated to tree planting and environmental stewardship. Visit www.arborday.org for online learning opportunities and to request specific educational materials, including lesson plans that correlate with National Science Standards.
