International Update
Inbound IFYEs
Botswana: Victoria Monnaatsie, a 38-year-old female that speaks English and Sewswana, has a Certificate in General Agriculture and an Associate’s Degree in Youth Development. She assists youth in establishing projects that include beekeeping, vegetable production, fruit production, poultry, and mobilizing youth into work camps. Her hobbies include interacting with young people, watching football games, and reading newspapers. She is anxious to learn more about 4-H in the United States. Victoria will be in Colorado June 19 through Sept. 1.
Germany: Katja Shruve is a 20-year-old female student. She was raised on a 450-acre farm for 20 years (grassland, corn, wheat, canola, and dairy). Katja is a three-year member of the Land Youth Club and is interested in rodeo, horseback riding, and swimming. She would like to visit horse ranches and wheat, corn, and dairy farms. She speaks German and English. Katja will be in Colorado July 11 through Sept 1.
Austria: Helga Wanberger is a 26-year-old female. She is a member of Landjugend (similar to 4-H). Helga is interested in horses, friends, skiing, swimming, and enjoying nature with her dog. She is also interested in learning more about US farms and cities. Helga speaks German and English and will be in Colorado June 19 through July 31.
Austria: Karin Baumann, a 23-year-old female, is an advisor at an agriculture office and lives on a farm (dairy, cattle, grain, and grass). She is also a member of Lanjugend. She is interested in walking, swimming, nature, and friends. She would like to learn about US agriculture, mainly cattle and milk production. Karin speaks German and English and will be in Colorado June 19 through July 31.
Japanese Summer Exchange: July 27 - Aug. 22, 2006
Host families are needed for 65 Japanese summer exchangees, boys and girls, ages 12-17. All participants are 100 percent medially covered and can participate in host family vacations. The homestay program emphasizes sharing of culture and “every day” home life. Host siblings are subsequently eligible to travel to Japan and stay with a host family.
Japanese High School Exchange: Aug. 1, 2006 - June 15, 2007
Colorado is hosting five Japanese high school students who will stay with host families and attend high school. There are two girls (ages 16) and three boys (ages 15 and 16) available. Participants are 100 percent medically covered and can participate in host family vacations and sports. They have received extensive orientation and English language training.
FLEX (Future Leaders Exchange): Aug. 15, 2006 - June 15, 2007
Colorado will host five high school students ages 15-18 from Eurasia: two from Russia, one from Kazakhstan, one from Ukraine and one from Armenia. These students stay with host families and attend high school. They are part of a democracy-building program instituted by the U.S. State Department as a result of the Freedom Support Act passed in 1993. The FLEX students have been selected from a large pool of applicants based on their English language skills and interest in learning about US culture.

Work Study Opportunity

4-H Scholarships due June 1
The following is a brief synopsis of a variety of scholarships available to Colorado youth. Please refer to our scholarships page for more details on the scholarships you are interested in applying for. You may also contact Shami Loose at 970.491.2768 if you have further questions. The scholarships listed below are all due in the State 4-H office by June 1, 2006. Note: Check with your Extension agent concerning local or regional 4-H scholarship availability.
Colorado Agricultural Development Authority 4-H Youth Scholarship (CADA): This scholarship is open to 4 H members who will be incoming freshmen majoring in an agriculture-related field. Applicants must be currently enrolled in 4-H and demonstrate involvement in citizenship, leadership and community service. Applicants must submit proof of admission to a Colorado community college or four-year institution, have a 3.0 GPA and maintain a 2.0 average while enrolled. To apply, submit a completed State 4-H Scholarship Application form with a one- to three-page résumé. Five scholarships of $1,000 will be awarded.
Bill and Barbara Holthaus Family 4-H Scholarship: These scholarships are open to incoming freshmen, currently enrolled as Colorado 4-H members, who have completed a minimum of three years of 4-H work as of the current year. Selection criteria includes leadership and citizenship involvement, 4-H achievements, scholarship potential and evidence of acceptance by a four-year college or university in Colorado. Contact your Extension agent or view our scholarships page to get a copy of the Holthaus Family 4-H Scholarship application form. Three scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded.
Kimberling Family 4-H Scholarship: This scholarship is open to 4-H members who have exhibited food animal projects and are enrolling in a pre-vet program at Colorado State University. Students must have a 3.0 GPA or higher. Applicants must submit a State 4-H Scholarship Application with specific criteria and a one- to three-page résumé. One $500 scholarship will be awarded in the spring if the applicant has maintained a 3.0 GPA.
Portouw Family Scholarship: This scholarship is open to Colorado 4-H members between 16 and 19 years of age who have completed the 4-H photography project for three years and entered their photography at the Colorado State Fair a minimum of two years. Applicants must complete the Colorado 4-H Scholarship Application form with specific criteria and a one- to three-page résumé. The recipient will receive a scholarship upon submission of passing grades for the first quarter/semester at a college, university or trade school. One scholarship of $300 will be awarded.
Audrey Sandstead Scholarship: This scholarship is open to Colorado 4-H members who will be incoming freshmen or transfer students at Colorado State University. Applicants must be pursuing a degree in the college of Applied Human Sciences. Selection will be based on financial need, a minimum 2.5 GPA, 4-H achievement, community leadership and citizenship. Applicants must submit the complete Colorado 4-H Scholarship Application and a one- to three-page résumé. One scholarship of approximately $400 will be awarded.
Howard E. and Marjory M. Smith 4-H Scholarship: This scholarship is open to 4-H members who will be incoming freshmen at any college or university, have a good academic record and demonstrate real financial need and support. Applicants must promote basic, traditional family values. Contact your Extension agent or vieo our scholarships page to get a copy of the Howard and Marjory Smith application form. Applicants must complete the application and submit a one- to three-page résumé. The scholarship will be awarded upon successful completion of the recipient’s first semester of college. One scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded. — Becky Fry
