A letter of reference from the Extension agent should be included with each application. The application deadline is June 1, 2006. Outstanding Volunteer Leader and
Youth Leadership and Citizenship Recognition

These awards support 4-H leaders, junior leaders (youth between 14 and 19 years of age) and alumni who provide leadership and support to 4-H Youth Development educational programs. They help to provide a positive learning environment for Colorado youth. The awards enable individuals to be recognized for outstanding efforts on behalf of others within the 4-H program and their community. These awards recognize individuals for:

  • Leadership in elected and appointed positions.
  • Positive impacts of their efforts on behalf of youth and their communities.
  • Service provided to their community.
  • Personal growth due to participation in the program.
  • Outstanding service to the 4-H program.
  • Personal achievement.
  • Continued participation in leadership roles.

Each county may nominate two leaders, junior leaders and alumni for recognition. Recipients are selected by a committee in June the year prior to recognition. Those selected receive their recognition and plaques during the recognition program at Leadership Development Conference.

Adult and youth strive for excellence in their volunteer roles at the club, county, district, and state levels, thereby increasing personal involvement and commitment to the 4-H program. Please take time to nominate (applications attached) the deserving individuals in your county. — Melissa Oliver

4-H Youth Fund Annual Golf Tournament – Save the Date!

It’s spring time in the Rockies, and that means it’s time to think about playing in the 11th Annual Paul Hoshiko Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament! Pelican Lakes Golf and Country Club is the destination, the date – Friday, June 2. We hope that this will be the best tournament yet, and you can help make it happen! We need volunteers for the day, door prizes, items for a silent auction, and of course, golfers! Please keep us in mind, as the proceeds will help benefit the IFYE program, and you all have 4 H members who may be interested in becoming a part of the IFYE experience. Please call me at 970.491.1537 if you are interested in helping out. — Becky Fry

Have Your Story Featured in the 2008 National 4-H Calendar!

National 4-H Supply Service wants to hear about your favorite 4-H project and why it is meaningful. Your story could be used in the 2008 National 4-H Calendar. Sending in a submission may even get you a free gift certificate towards your next purchase of merchandise from the 4-H Source Book!

The 2008 calendar theme is “My Favorite 4-H Project.” It will be up to 4-H members, volunteers, parents, staff and partners to furnish the stories that will be featured. These personal testaments must tell the what, when, where, why, and how; so everyone can understand how 4-H projects are meaningful.

One story for each month will be featured in the calendar and the author will receive one $10 gift certificate towards a future purchase in the 4-H Source Book. Please limit your entry to 125 words due to the space restrictions of the calendar. Don't forget to include your contact information.

Please e-mail, fax or mail your stories by April 30, 2006 to: Maria Cascioli, National 4-H Supply Service, 7100 Connecticut Avenue, Chevy Chase, MD 20815; e-mail mcascioli@fourhcouncil.edu; phone: 301.961.2948; or fax 301.961.2937.

Horse Project Helmet Survey

The State 4-H office and the State 4-H Horse Committee are conducting a survey to retrieve information from around the state regarding the use of protective helmets by Colorado 4 H members enrolled in the horse project. The survey can be accessed on the Colorado State University Equine Extension website at:

www.equineextension.colostate.edu

This web-based survey will be active from February 10 through April 14, 2006. I am requesting that all county Extension offices have at least one agent respond to the survey and I also encourage you to have as many of the 4-H horse project members, parents, and leaders in your county respond to the survey as well.

The results of the survey will be presented at the next State 4-H Horse Committee meeting which will be held at the Adams County Extension office on April 18, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. The subject of helmet use in the horse project will be addressed at this meeting. I will take the recommendations from the committee as well as the compiled survey results to make a decision regarding State 4-H office policy on this issue. Agents, parents, members, and leaders are welcome to attend.

If you or any 4-H member, parent or leader would like to speak with me prior to the horse committee meeting, please contact me at 970.491.1152.

I appreciate your input on this important issue. — Jeff Goodwin
