2006 4-H Youth & Community ATV Safety Grants

The 2006 4-H Youth & Community ATV Safety Grants are offering grants up to $7,500 for new applicants and $2,000 to 2005 grant recipients with continuation grants. The 2005 grant recipients may apply for a new grant if their focus is new and has a broader reach. Funding is provided by Specialty Vehicle Institute of America.

This grant is open to 4 H/Extension groups in local communities, counties, and at the state level. The program provides opportunities for young people and adults to address critical literacy needs of youth and their families. Youth are empowered to lead the planning, implementation, and evaluation process with minimal mentorship from adults. Youth will learn how their leadership can result in community collaborations that amplify the impact of their project.

Information and the grant application can be found at http://www.atv-youth.org/grants.aspx on the bottom of the page under “2006 ATV Safety Grants.” Please contact Jan Carroll (Jan.Carroll@colostate.edu, 970.491.2601) or Brenda Noakes (Brenda.Noakes@colostate.edu, 970.724.3436) as soon as possible if you are interested in submitting a grant.

Martha Stewart Wants a 4-H’er

Many of you may recall Ohio 4-Her Brian Kessie’s appearance on the Martha Stewart Show last October. She was so impressed with Brian that her producer called National 4-H Council again and is looking for a 4-Her they can have on their St. Patrick’s Day show, taping March 14, in New York City.

Do you know any young 4-Hers (ages 8-13) who are confident, smart, talkative, and well-versed in a subject that could be tied to St. Patrick’s Day? The producer is open to suggestions, but some ideas we’re thinking about include:

  • 4-Her who can teach Martha about clovers; how to grow them, the varieties that exist, their historical significance, the difference between a clover and a shamrock, etc.
  • 4-Her who can show Martha how to do a unique craft involving clovers
  • 4-Her or club that is doing a community service project with a clover element (for example: raising funds for hurricane relief by selling clover items, sending lucky 4-leaf clovers to disadvantaged youth, has a neighborhood beautification project with a clover patch, etc.)

It has to be something they can talk about or demonstrate in the studio for at least 5-15 minutes. Just like last time, the producer will want to evaluate ideas and talk to the proposed youth. Also, the topic and youth selection are totally their choice, so we don’t want to raise hopes or expectations.

Please contact Martha Gwyn Donohue, Director, Marketing Communications and Media Relations, National 4-H Council at
301.961.2823 or gdonohue@fourhcouncil.edu with any questions or suggestions you might have as soon as possible.

International Update

IFYE Reporting
Participants in the International Four-H Youth Exchange (IFYE) enhance the 4-H program through educational international, cross-cultural experiences that enable young people to improve their leadership and communication skills, while increasing their international awareness and understanding.

2005 IFYE Representatives Adrienne Bergenfeld (El Paso County to Austria and Greece) and Kenny Kroschel (Larimer County to Northern Ireland and England) returned in December from six months in their host countries. Adrienne and Kenny are available to share their international experiences at schools (language, history, geography classes, general assemblies), service organizations, churches, 4-H clubs, etc., mid-January through mid-April 2006.

Adrienne is 23 years old and has a BA from the University of Northern Colorado in Communication and Journalism. She is a 10-year 4-H member. Her leisure interests are reading, cooking, and working with nonprofit organizations.

Kenny is 26 years old and has a BA from Montana State University in Diesel Technology. He is a 10-year 4-H member. His leisure interests are dogs, drag racing and hunting.

Please contact me to schedule an IFYE in your county.
