2006 ESRI GIS Grant Program
ESRI has announced two grant options for the ESRI GIS Grant Program, designed for 4-H in support of geospatial outreach, education, and community involvement efforts. The goal of this program is to foster and support the integration of geographic information system (GIS) software in U.S. 4-H clubs.
Grant categories include an introductory grant for 4-H clubs new to GIS and global positioning systems (GPS) and an intermediate grant for those 4-H clubs that received previous ESRI 4-H grants and completed the grant requirements.
Eligible applicants: A 4-H community or in-school club, after-school program, special interest group, school enrichment group, camp, or similar 4-H unit that meets regularly and is recognized as an authorized 4-H group within its state’s 4-H program.
Application period: January 1 – March 31, 2006

International Update
2006 4-H Teen Ambassadors – This is a new opportunity for 4-H youth with leadership and international hosting/travel experience to get more involved with the Japanese High School Program. Selected teens will go to Seattle, WA July 24-31, 2006, to help lead the week-long high school arrival/orientation program. Participants must be 16-19 years old, have previous hosting experience of a year-long Japanese high school delegate, and preferred experience with a summer outbound program to Japan. Travel, lodging, and meals are arranged and paid for by the 4-H International Programs Committee. Deadline for applications is April 3.
4-H Colorado-Japan Outbound Exchange – Individuals can apply for a four-week homestay in Japan from July 12 – Aug. 10 or a seven-week Nihongo Culture Program/homestay from June 15 – Aug. 10. The program fee for the four-week homestay is $3,450; program fee for the seven-week program is $4,270. Fees include pre-departure orientation in Denver and Seattle (four-week stay), round trip airfare Denver to Tokyo, supplemental insurance, travel in Japan, homestay arrangements, adult supervision, and supplemental medical insurance. Applications are due in the State 4-H office by March 1.

IFYE Reporting
Participants in the International Four-H Youth Exchange (IFYE) enhance the 4-H program through educational international, cross-cultural experiences that enable young people to improve their leadership and communication skills, while increasing their international awareness and understanding.
2005 IFYE Representatives Adrienne Bergenfeld (El Paso County to Austria and Greece) and Kenny Kroschel (Larimer County to Northern Ireland and England) returned in December from six months in their host countries. Adrienne and Kenny are available to share their international experiences at schools (language, history, geography classes, general assemblies), service organizations, churches, 4-H clubs, etc., from mid-January through mid-April, 2006.
Adrienne is 23 years old and has a BA from the University of Northern Colorado in communication and journalism. She is a 10-year 4-H member. Her leisure interests are reading, cooking, and working with nonprofit organizations.
Kenny is 26 years old and has a BA from Montana State University in diesel technology. He is a 10-year 4-H member. His leisure interests are dogs, drag racing and hunting.
