Make a Difference Day

"Make a Difference Day" is scheduled for Oct. 22, 2005. This is an annual event sponsored by USA Weekend. You may even recall seeing the results of outstanding groups published every spring in the Sunday morning newspaper supplement. If you volunteer regularly, great! On Make a Difference Day, you can give an extra push to your ongoing volunteer activity. You can receive up to $10,000 for outstanding projects!

If you don't do community service now, here's an opportunity to get started. You could clean up an elderly neighbor's house or yard, organize your community to replant and repair a local park, or visit lonely, institutionalized kids or the elderly. The Sewing Educators Alliance Youth Sewing Committee is inviting 4-H'ers to join the "Pillow Patrol" to create pillowcases as part of a project to help foster children.

Health Forms and 4-H Members

There was a little confusion with our Citizenship-Washington Focus delegation this year about health forms and the need for signatures of physicians.

For events more than 72 hours, parents must "present a statement confirming a physical examination which has been performed within the preceding twenty-four months by a licensed physician or qualified, licensed nurse practitioner." Our health form asks parents to give the date of the last physical, along with the physician's name and phone number. Parents could bring a copy of the child's last physical examination attached to our form. It is not necessary for physicians to sign the health form. - Dale Leidheiser

Vet Science Projects

For those of you who have not had your county fair yet, here is a reminder about the Vet Science projects. The manual that is required is Unit 1 – Airedales to Zebras - with a minimum of seven activities and seven booster shots. Unit 2 – All Systems Go - with a minimum of seven activities and seven booster shots and Unit 3 – On the Cutting Edge - with a minimum of seven activities and seven booster shots. The manuals from Nebraska are for resource only. Hope this helps. — Connie Cecil

National 4-H Conference Planning Committee

Congratulations to Claire Dixon, Morgan County, who has been selected by 4-H Headquarters, USDA, as a member of the 76th National 4-H Conference Planning Committee. 4-H members have an opportunity to participate on one national 4-H event planning committee and we are pleased about her selection! - Dale Leidheiser

Photography Awards

Tamron, USA, will again sponsor three $100 saving bonds to the Grand Champion Junior, Intermediate and Senior 4-H Photography Exhibitors and three $50 savings bonds to the Reserve Grand Champion Junior, Intermediate and Senior 4-H Photography Exhibitors. All State Fair 4-H photography exhibitors will receive a T-shirt courtesy of Tamron, USA. The bonds will be ordered immediately after selection so that they may be presented to the recipients during their county achievement night program. - Connie Cecil
