I wanted to thank all of you for all that you do on behalf of Colorado State University Extension, 4-H Youth Development and the youth and families in your communities! Your dedication to improving the lives of Colorado's young people is awesome. All the youth, families, volunteers and Extension staff I have had the privilege to work with over my career have made my job so rewarding. I am going to miss the interaction with all of you, but know you will continue to do your jobs with the greatest of professionalism. Best wishes to you and thank you!!! - Sue Cummings

Attached as a WORD file to this week's Update is a summary of new projects, new manuals, revised manuals and discontinued projects. Are you interested, or know someone who might be, in serving on the 2006 National 4-H Technology Leadership Conference Planning Committee? Would you be interested in hosting the National 4-H Technology Leadership Conference in 2006? If so, the Planning Committee application is available at: www.cyfernet.org/4htech/AppPlanCommTC2006.rtf. The Planning Committee process is open through Oct. 1, rather than the Sept. 15 date listed on the form, since they were late in sending this document out to the entire system.

The Conference host site is: www.cyfernet.org/4htech/RFPSite2006.rtf. If you have questions contact Trudy Dunham at: dunha003@umn.edu. - Dale Leidheiser

Beginning Foods Units vs. Baking

With the introduction of the new Baking specialty foods project I have received calls concerning the difference between the two project areas and how they relate to member enrollment.

When the Foods and Nutrition Committee developed the project matrix, they felt that members should start in the beginning units. Once they have completed these units they would then move on to the specialty projects. This would be especially true for young members who are just beginning their foods and nutrition experiences. Older members may find they want to enroll in both a beginning unit as well as a specialty unit as they can accomplish both easier than a younger individual. This would be at the discretion of the volunteer, member and their family.

The Beginning Foods Units (1 - 4) focus on helping youth learn to make healthy lifestyle choices related to foods, nutrition, exercise, weight management, shopping and preparing food. It focuses on a more holistic approach to life using foods as the topic. It is written for the young member and tries to address the issues these individuals may be facing. The materials are not as product-oriented as the old manuals were, as the need to help youth develop healthier diets is a major issue within Colorado. The new leader guides provide a whole variety of learning activities to help teach the principles listed above as well as exhibit product and evaluation.

The new Baking materials are product-oriented. They do not go into any depth related to nutrition and do not cover weight management, exercise, shopping or foods in general. They do overlap somewhat with the breads project as well as the beginning units; however, they do not go into the depth of these topics as the other units. They are oriented to those who want to learn very specific baking skills related to more specific product areas (i.e., cakes, pastries, pies, etc.).

There currently is an exhibit overlap between Beginning Foods, Unit 2, and the Unit 21 Baking unit. Both are to exhibit muffins at this point. After the Baking materials have been used for a year or so, there may be another exhibit identified that would help eliminate this duplication.

Hopefully this will help clarify some of the questions. - Sue Cummings
