Howdy!

I'd like to let the people involved in the 4-H program know that I am excited to serve as the 4-H Director in Colorado. I look forward to the opportunities that await us all.

I have a background of 21 years in Extension with nearly 14 years in Texas (most of which as a county Extension Agent), and eight years as a state 4-H Specialist in Idaho.

As a way for you to get to know me and the way I like to operate, the following are some of my beliefs that I use to guide me as I work with people:

  • Take change by the hand before it grabs you by the throat. — Winston Churchill
  • Treat people the way you want to be treated.
  • I like to be around and surround myself with people who have a positive and optimistic attitude.
  • Enjoy life: this is not a dress rehearsal!
  • When you surround yourself with "can-do" kind of people, the work is fun to do and more of it gets done.

Here are some things that guide me as I deal with controversial and difficult situations: (Not that there will ever be any in this state!):

  • If you never step on anyone's toes, you probably aren't moving your feet very much.
  • If you stick your head in the sand, you leave a very sensi- tive target exposed.
  • You can count on me to be kind and fair in my dealings with people. You can also count on me to be tough when I need to be. I would also say that when it's required of me to be tough, I will at the same time be kind and fair.

Feel free to contact me if there is ever anything that I or anyone at the State 4-H office can do for you to help your county 4-H program become bigger and better.

And thanks for the opportunity to serve the state of Colorado. — Jeff Goodwin

Wanted: Freshmen 4-H'ers
Attending CSU!

Agents, please encourage your 4-H'ers who are attending CSU as freshmen to apply to be a 4-H Scholar. The 4-H Scholars promote the positive experiences they had in 4-H and spend up to 20 hours a month representing 4-H at key activities, speaking at public events, and meeting with stakeholders and donors. For their efforts, each Scholar receives training, public relations support materials, reimbursement for expenses, and a $1,500 annual stipend toward college expenses. The person selected is eligible to continue to serve as a Scholar throughout their college career – advancing to each grade level – as long as their grades and activity commitments are met. The freshmen applicants must be willing to make a four-year commitment.

To apply, interested persons enrolled at Colorado State University must submit the following to Katy Kohnen, 130 Aylesworth Hall NW, Colorado State University Extension, Fort Collins, CO 80523-4050 by Oct. 15, 2004.

  • Complete résumé that includes 4-H experiences, years in projects, leadership and speaking experiences and skills, community service activities, work-related experiences, awards and special recognitions.

  • A (draft) letter of thanks to the Colorado Farm Bureau thanking them for their contribution and funding support for the 4-H Scholars Program.

  • A short paragraph (100 words or less) explaining why they wish to become involved in the 4-H Scholar's Program; a personal statement of desire for the Scholar position.

  • Individuals applying will make a 10-minute presentation before the selection committee on "the scope of 4-H today and what 4-H has meant to them."

2005 Colorado 4-H Bears

The Colorado 4-H Youth Fund will again submit a state order for the 2005 Colorado 4-H collector bears. The 2005 bears are dark brown with a light brown nose and paws. There is a green 4-H clover on the left chest and he will also have a green visor that says "Colorado s 4-H." If we have a minimum order of 800 bears there will be a Colorado flag on the right arm and U.S. flag on the left arm and 2005 on the paw. The cost to counties is $7.00 each. Depending on the total order and when we place it, bears should be available by the end of January. Please e-mail your county order to me before Oct. 25. (ebutler@coop.ext.colostate.edu). As always, we look forward to hearing from you! — Ellen Butler

Youth Financial Education

Here is a resource you can use with teens -- maybe connecting it to youth participating in Financial Champions: The NEFE Teen Resource BureauSM (NTRB) Web site is located at www.ntrbonline.org. It has been updated recently to include new content regarding money personality. The new material explores how different types of individuals manage their money and helps teens define their own financial traits. New additions include a story about one girl's journey to discover her fiscal personality, a quiz to learn more about one's own money-management style and answers to frequently asked questions regarding approaches to personal financial planning. All content is available in English, Spanish and text-only versions. — Jan Carroll

International Update

IFYE Representative applications are due Nov. 1. Qualified applicants may travel to areas of Africa, Asia, Australia, Eastern Europe, Western Europe, and Latin America. Applicants must be 19-30 years old, 4-H alumni, and interested in living and working with host families in other countries. Three-month and six-month programs are available, leaving in June and returning in September or December. The IFYE program offers cultural experiences which enable young people to improve their leadership and communication skills, while increasing their international awareness and understanding. Participants have the opportunity to share their experiences across Colorado upon their return. The Colorado 4-H Youth Fund offers two full scholarships annually, with the exception of personal spending money.

Please contact Courtney Loflin, 4-H International Programs Coordinator, at 970.491.2711 or e-mail: cloflin@coop.ext.colostate.edu. Thank you! — Courtney Loflin
