Special Award Recipients
Judges' score sheets for each model were put in county boxes in the back of the Exhibit Building. - Sue Cummings Forestry AwardsCongratulations to Cole Roberts, Logan County, and Caitlin Robirds, Delta County, recipients of the Colorado Foresters Association sponsored awards. Both will receive bonds at their county 4-H achievement night programs this fall. - Sue Cummings Photography AwardsTamron USA, Inc. sponsors savings bonds for the Junior and Senior Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Photography exhibitors at the Colorado State Fair. Recipients of the 2004 bonds are:
Congratulations to each of these individuals for their outstanding photography exhibits. - Sue Cummings Grand Champion Senior Clothing AwardCongratulations to Ms. Leah Kettelson, Yuma County, who exhibited the Grand Champion Senior Clothing Construction garment! Leah received a Baby Lock Ellure Sewing/Embroi-dery machine donated by the Baby Lock Sewing Machine Company and Sprinkles Sewing Center, Pueblo. Jerry Benfit of Sprinkles Sewing Center presented the machine to Leah during the State 4-H Fashion Revue. Leah's garment and sewing/embroidery machine are currently on display in the Exhibit Building on the Colorado State Fair grounds. Special appreciation goes to Jerry and Kathy Binfet of Sprinkles Sewing Center. They took action when the previous donor withdrew its donation and found another donor who would provide an equal machine to the champion exhibitor. Without their dedication to the 4-H program and commitment to provide recognition for quality workmanship this award would not have been possible. - Sue Cummings Wheat AwardsThe Colorado Wheat Administrative Committee has just confirmed sponsorship of the 4-H Wheat Awards. We chose not to announce these awards until we received confirmation of their decision to continue to support them. They will recognize one individual per county for their outstanding efforts in the 4-H Breads project as well as the first and second place exhibitors in the 4-H Breads project classes at state fair. We ask that counties send the name and address of their county wheat award winners to us as soon as possible. I will request checks for those I receive prior to the end of September. After Oct. 1 the names and addresses are to be sent to Susan Cuckler who will help facilitate check payments. - Sue Cummings Youth and Adult Judges Sought for National 4-H Grant Selection CommitteeNational 4-H Council seeks volunteer judges for the National 4-H Youth in Action/Community Tree Planting Grant funded by Deft, Inc. Serving as a judge on the Selection Committee is a great way to educate yourself about the proposal writing and evaluation process. Judges read through all submitted proposals, score them, and participate in a conference call to discuss scores and recommend awards. Judges MUST be available for a conference call, which will be approximately two- to three-hours long, between Oct. 4, 2004 and Oct. 6, 2004. You would need to indicate the time that you are available, between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on those days. Also let them know as soon as possible if you can volunteer as a judge. To apply to be a part of the Selection Committee, simply reply to wngenge@fourhcouncil.edu with the following information:
Please note: They will only contact those people that are selected to be judges. However, all judge applicants are kept on file and may be contacted to judge a future grant. You are not eligible to be a member of a Selection Committee if your group currently is applying for the grant. Your time and efforts are very much appreciated in this process. For more information about the grant, go to www.grants.n4h.org/ and click on "Tree Planting" or contact Wawa Ngenge, Program Coordinator, at wngenge@fourhcouncil.edu or 301.961.2858. To sign up for the Grant Program Listserv, which sends occasional emails with grant announcements and updates, enter your email address on the home page of www.grants.n4h.org/. - Dale Leidheiser Hurricane Charley AftermathThe following message was received from the Florida Extension Service concerning help for victims of the hurricane. "As you are all aware, Hurricane Charley made landfall on Florida's west coast near Punta Gorda as a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 145 mph and gusts even higher. He then made his way across Florida's peninsula leaving a path of destruction behind him. Many of you have expressed your concern. We are pleased to report that all of our faculty and staff have been safely accounted for. Some property, including personal property, county Extension offices and research centers were damaged by Charley's fierce wind and rain - some more severely than others. Numerous residents in affected areas continue to operate without electricity and phone service - a situation that will likely continue for at least an additional seven- to 10-days in some areas. Some families have found themselves suddenly homeless or with uninhabitable homes. Food, water and gasoline are scarce commodities, but while it will be quite some time before things are back to normal, support has been quick and generous. As we begin to recover from this disaster, we appreciate your well-wishes. Some of you have asked what you can do to help. The best way to help with our recovery efforts is to support us with time or monetary donations to one of the major organizations at the forefront of the recovery effort. Several are listed below.
You can also go to www.tbo.com to learn more about the recovery effort and additional ways you can help. Thank you for your concern and well wishes, please keep your thoughts with those in need."- Marilyn Norman and Kristin Guira |
