ADAD Moves CFERT Project to Colorado State University Extension

Partners in Parenting (PIP) has been a familiar program to Extension for the last 14 years. The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division (ADAD) of the Colorado Department of Human Services has funded the program continually since 1990 to deliver the Training-of-Trainers for the Partners in Parenting Parent Education Curriculum, to produce the Parenting Matters newsletters and PIP Tips, to provide resources through the PIP library, and to offer technical assistance to agencies and communities. In the last four years, CSUCE Partners in Parenting has collaborated with Red Rocks Community College to provide statewide "parenting as prevention services." This joint project was called the Colorado Family Education, Resources and Training (CFERT). The mission of CFERT is to provide the leadership, education, information, resources, support and advocacy in the area of family education and involvement. Beginning July 1, 2004 the CFERT project will be housed at CSUCE. CFERT will offer programs and services that will include the Partners in Parenting Program, Kinship Care Program, Early Childhood Program (SKILLS and other workshops), School Based Programming, and the Parenting Information Clearinghouse and Resource Center. The Center for Substance Abuse Prevention Strategies of Information Dissemination, Community Based Processes, and Education are utilized as service delivery schemes. Besides providing workshops, training, and resources, the project offers technical assistance in parent education program development/strategic planning, marketing, evaluation, and parent education facilitation/mentoring/ coaching. For more information about programs and services, please contact me at 800.457.2736.

Youth Fund Update

Congratulations to Laura Schick! Laura, Secretary of the Colorado 4-H Youth Fund, Inc. board of trustees and President of the Colorado IFYE Association, recently received a volunteer recognition award from Wells Fargo Bank. An employee of Wells Fargo, Laura applied for this award based on the countless number of hours she spends volunteering for these two organizations. We are most grateful to her for her dedication to the Colorado 4-H Youth Fund and the IFYE Association. Nice going Laura!

Recognize the Outstanding Youth in Your Community

The Nestlé Very Best In Youth program, co-sponsored by Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) and Nestlé USA, honors young people ages 10-18 who have made reading a priority, have contributed significantly to the quality of life in their communities, and have inspired other young people to do their very best.

At least 25 winners will be selected. Prizes include a trip with a parent/guardian to Los Angeles for an awards ceremony, a Certificate of Appreciation from Nestlé USA and RIF, a $1,000 donation to the winner's charity of choice, and a profile in the 2005 Very Best In Youth publication.

Nomination forms are available online and must be received by Nov. 1, 2004..

If you know a young person who is a good candidate, be sure to tell him or her about the Nestlé Very Best In Youth program and encourage them to participate. Don't let their exemplary achievements go unnoticed.

Congratulations Routt County!

Last week the Routt County 4-H mapping team was recognized in the Denver Post for their innovative work using global positioning system devices and geographic information system software to map invasive weeds. The six-member team pinpointed Russian olive and tamarisk plants at the Elk Head State Park using GPS devices and GIS software.

Data collected by them will be used by Routt County and the Colorado Department of State Parks to eradicate the damaging plants before the dam at Elk Head Reservoir northeast of Craig is raised and the water level rises. The higher water would help spread more tamarisk and Russian olive plants downstream if they weren't eliminated first.

The club received the GPS devices, the computer and the software for the project with help from Colorado State University Extension, the Steamboat Springs-based Orton Family Foundation and ESRI, a mapping and software company.

The Routt County mapping team will travel to St. Louis next week to present the weed project to 300 other 4-H members at the National 4-H Technology Leadership Conference.

For the entire story please go online.

Good job Jay and the Routt County 4-H mapping team!
