Colorado State 4-H Conference UpdateWe had a very successful conference last week - more participants, great workshops, inspiring speakers and good weather! It was the kind of experience we were hoping would be shared by most participants. The behavioral incidents we experienced this year are not unique to State 4-H Conference. We have had encounters with youth in possession of alcohol over the past several years. We all need to be more vigilant about underage drinking and take appropriate steps to prohibit it from occurring and enforce the consequences when it does take place. The code of conduct is a starting point for letting 4-H members and their parents know what behavior we expect. Orientations for delegates attending events out of the county are important to communicate program information and reiterate behavioral expectations. Rumors and evidence about behaviors must be taken seriously, followed up on and dealt with immediately. There are two choices we have in these cases. One, we can keep it within 4-H, call families and have delegates removed from the program. The Colorado 4-H Youth Development Handbook specifies that youth call their parents, explain what they've done, and ask to be picked up as soon as possible. Before they hang up, confirm with parents when they anticipate arriving at the location. Or, because it is a legal issue, call law enforcement to handle the situation. Complete details are on page 9.20 of the handbook. We're in the business of youth development and our goal in bad situations should be about the learning process when poor decision-making takes place. - Dale Leidheiser 2004 Scholarship RecipientsListed below are the scholarship recipients that were recently recognized at the 2004 State 4-H Conference. Host an event in your community on July 15, 2004 that showcases 4-H and raises awareness about the benefits of our summer programs. A wide array of public agencies, non-profit organizations, schools, universities, and summer camps across the country will celebrate the first annual Summer Learning Day. Events will include special field trips, visits from city leaders, literacy events, career days, and open houses. For more information about Summer Learning Day and/or to tell about your event, please visit the web site at www.summerlearning.org/summerlearningday. - Jan Carroll Sewing For Others Helps ChildrenFifteen participants during the State 4-H Conference Sewing For Others workshop dedicated their sewing skills to finish five tied blankets, 14 bound blankets, 24 serged-edge blankets and 27 hats for young children who have suffered some form of trauma in their lives. The fleece blankets and hats were given to the regional office of Project Linus for distribution to children in the Northeast area who are in need of comfort and warmth. The following State 4-H Clothing Committee members were involved with the workshop: Sharon Blackham, Yuma County; Lulu Marie Hatheway, Adams County; Julia Hurdelbrink, Adams County; and Gisele Jefferson, Washington County. Copies of the simple patterns and clothing-related community service projects are available from our office if you are interested. Members and volunteers are encouraged to check within their own communities for projects that will address local needs. - Sue Cummings Outdoor Cookery ExhibitIt was brought to our attention that the exhibit requirements in the Outdoor Cookery Record does not match that described in the syllabus.
